Founded in 2018 by a radiologic technologist working in orthopedic surgery, CALOMED began with a simple but powerful idea: healthcare professionals deserve apparel that is as comfortable, reliable, and uplifting as the care they provide every day.
Fresh out of school and newly hired in the OR, I quickly learned how demanding long surgical shifts could be and how uncomfortable disposable scrub caps really were. They weren’t breathable, didn’t fit well, and were especially harsh on hair after hours under surgical lights. Small discomforts added up during long days, and it was clear something better was needed.
That’s when I turned to my mom. She studied fine arts at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdan, Netherlands and has always had a creative eye. Together, we started experimenting using store-bought fabrics, she taught me how to sew scrub caps for myself. Before long, coworkers began noticing. They asked where I bought them, then asked if I could make some for them too.
With student loans, a mortgage, and a growing workload, the idea of turning this into a second job felt both practical and exciting. Why not create scrub caps designed by someone who actually works in the OR?
As demand grew, so did our vision. We noticed that many shops, both in stores and online, relied on the same limited fabric prints. We wanted to do something different. Something more personal. So we decided to create our own designs. I began designing custom prints in 2021 and my mom brought them to life by hand-sewing each cap with care and precision.
What started as a personal solution became a family-run brand rooted in creativity, passion, and deep respect for the medical community. Every CALOMED scrub cap is thoughtfully designed with comfort, fit, and individuality in mind because we know firsthand how much the right details can make a difference during a long shift.
